Mark Cavendish sprint training
Mark Cavendish sprint training: welcome to a masterclass with the fastest man on two wheels
In tandem with our post on fast descending with Mark Cavendish, here the world's fastest sprinter delivers pearls of wisdom on how to put some fire into your own sprint.
The most enlightening thing when asking him to explain sprint technique was how just hard he had to work to put it into words. Why? Because, as he puts it, “I don’t normally think about this”. He just does it.
But with a little work, the tips began to flow so if you’re ready for finish line pace here’s how to find it:
1 Body position:
“You want to lean forwards, as far as you can. Really exaggerate it – it will feel like much further than you need”
2 Bike attitude:
“Move the bike from side to side as far as you can”. As with the body position this will also feel exaggerated"
3 Hands, arms and shoulders:
"Relaxed, hands not gripping the bars too tight. White knuckles are a sign you’re doing it wrong!"

4 Gearing:
"Big ring at the front, smallest you can handle at the back. Simple"
5 Traction:
“If you’re in a high enough gear the back won’t spin or step out – if it does you’re in the wrong gear”.

Conclusion
So there you have it. Just add talent, grit, a great team and the unerring ability to spot a gap as the finish lines hoves into view coupled with the stamina left to beat the world’s best across it, and the cajones to do so unthinkingly in the mayhem that follows.
